A passenger’s guide to air travel safety

Passengers always think about their safety when it comes to traveling, and air travel is most commonly thought to be dangerous by many. While the world proves to be dangerous, flying via commercial flights is, in fact, the safest mode of travel as no other form of transportation is inspected, examined, and supervised as commercial aviation.

Leaders in the aviation industry see an improvement in safety performance over time, as the percentage of airline accidents in global flights continue to decrease. Not only do airlines provide enhanced technology for in-flight entertainments and premium economy class seating options, but they are also taking leaps to improve their technology and equipment to make flying even safer.

There will still be potential passengers who would have to face their fears when it comes to flying even when statistics say that air travel is the safest mode of transportation. The best way to overcome this fear is to get as educated as possible to feel comfortable when flying. In a study conducted by Dr. Arnold Barnett of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he found that in a span of 15 years, the death risk per flight was one in 7 million.

As plane tickets get cheaper and become more affordable, the safety of the industry doesn't get compromised, rather commercial flights are studied and improved for a better flying experience for first-time and frequent fliers. The numbers are on the industry’s side, and all a fearful passenger should do is to bulk up on facts to feel as comfortable as possible while on-board a well-examined aircraft.

Aviation tidbits: Learn more about the industry

It sounds cliché, but it’s true – man has been captivated with flight since the dawn of time. After centuries upon centuries of dreaming and planning, man has finally realized his dream of soaring in the sky. With the advancement of technology in the past 100 years, flight has evolved in an unprecedented manner. Below are some of the interesting facts that have to do with aviation.

  •  Even with the knowledge that airplanes and flying, in general, is the safest way to travel, people are still afraid to fly. Perhaps knowing the aircraft are very well protected against lightning strikes can help minimize the fear.
  •  Flying at a high altitude alters the bodily senses in many different ways. People hear things differently. Their bodies react to alcohol more quickly. And many of the things they eat have altered tastes.

  •  The fear of flight is called aviophobia.
  •  Around 8 out of every 10 major plane accidents were found to be within the first three minutes from taking off, and eight minutes before landing. This is why to minimize such risks, people are urged to take non-stop flights whenever they can.

  •  In 1977, one of the worst airplane incidents occurred when two passenger-full planes collided on the runway.
